Is Telstra DOT Digital Office Technology good value for the typical small business?

We don’t think so!

With the NBN roll out underway, many business’s are not aware that they will need to make changes to their Phone Systems and in a lot of cases, the Phone System will need to be replaced mainly with Hosted PBX systems. Telstras are calling their new System DOT ( Digital Office technology).

We have been reviewing the Telstra DOT (Digital Office Technology) offers online recently and comparing with the Telaustralia Hosted PBX offers.

When we compare a fairly typical small business customer with 4 handsets and doing around 3-500 local and National calls a month and around 400 Calls to mobile a month some of results are massive.

So we did a table top assessment comparing the Telstra 24mth plans without No contract Hosted PBX plans. We compared a business with 4 X Cisco SPA 504G handsets, 250 local calls, 150 national calls of 2mins each and 300 2 minute calls to mobiles per month. We have added in a Fax Line and Line Hunt for this business.

Telstra DOT Comparison

We compared the above business profile using each of the Telstra S, M, L and XL core plans compared to the Telaustralia No Contract Hosted PBX plan. We came up with the following results….

Telstra DOT Small Core Plan + 3 X Medium add on plans Total would be $562 with 50Gb Data. Telaustralia Hosted PBX would be $384 per month or a saving of $178 per mth or $4272 over the life of the contract.

Telstra DOT Medium Core Plan + 3 X Medium add on plans Total would be $570 with 100Gb Data. Telaustralia Hosted PBX would be $394 per month or a saving of $176 per mth or $4224 over the life of the contract.

Telstra DOT Large Core Plan + 3 X Large add on plans Total would be $575 with 250Gb Data. Telaustralia Hosted PBX would be $404 per month or a saving of $171per mth or $4104 over the life of the contract

Telstra DOT XL Core Plans + 3 X XL add on plans Total would be $550 with 1000Gb Data. Telaustralia Hosted PBX would be $414 per month or a saving of $136 per mth or $3264 over the life of the contract.

Even when we double the number of calls to mobiles we are saving over $300 on the DOT Small and Medium plans, $200 per mth on the DOT Large Plan and break even on the XL plan.

When we change the average Call to Mobile from a 2 minute average to a 1 minute average, the minimum saving  is $136 per mth.

Digital Office Technology Comparison Summary

The Telstra DOT Digital Office Technology plans are a subscription based service where there is less weighting on the actual number of calls the customer makes and more emphasis on the line rental being paid. Unless the customer is an extremely heavy user these plans will be adding unnecessary cost to your monthly communications bill.

In addition Telstra’s plans are all a minimum of 24mth contract. One major difference however is that the Telstra handset charges are included in the monthly rental… so for as long as you have the equipment, Telstra charges a a monthly access fee for the life of the arrangement. So a $250 handset will be costing your business $10 a month for as long as you have the equipment and with a life span over around 10 years …thats $1200 for each handset. Telaustralia charges an up front for the purchase of the equipment (a Cisco SPA 504g handset is $250 inc, delivered and ready to use) and we also have finance options so it doesn’t take long to be well in front of the Telstra offer.
