HOSTED PBX PHONE SYSTEMS VS PSTN

A 30 SECOND GUIDE TO CHANGING FROM PSTN PHONE LINES TO HOSTED PBX

I read with interest an industry survey from telecom comparison website detailing why some customers choose to change to Hosted PBX or SIP Trunks while others choose to remain with PSTN phone lines.

http://www.softwareadvice.com/voip/industryview/PSTN-report-2014/

Telstra DOT Phone Systems

In short the main reasons to move from PSTN or Hosted PBX or SIP Trunks are ...

  • Lower Purchase and Monthly Operating Costs
  • Desktop and mobile compatibility
  • More features
  • Easily scalable and portable
  • NBN Compatibility

The main reason users remain with PSTN or ISDN lines are ...

  • Ease of Use
  • Fewer service interruptions
  • Better Voice Quality
  • Security/Fraud concerns
  • Don't know what Hosted PBX or VoIP is
  • Internet is unreliable.

Our observations are the main reasons for going to Hosted PBX are lower purchase price, cheaper running costs and additional phone systems features such as the ability to seamlessly transfer calls to other sites. A emerging trend is clients in areas where the NBN roll out has commenced who want a Phone System that can run over an ADSL connection but is also NBN compatible.

Our experience in Australia is that due to the state of the copper network, the out comes running over an ADSL connection can vary dramatically. NBN and SHDSL Business Grade Internet connections in comparison, rarely have an issue. Running Hosted PBX over an ADSL on the other hand, can be effected by packet loss, drop outs and contention.

This is why we thoroughly test an ADSL connection where possible before proceeding with a Hosted PBX installation. It is not uncommon for us to say to a prospective client that due to distance from the exchange, ADSL speed or line quality, we don't recommend a Hosted PBX for this particular site. In these cases we usually recommend the client install a traditional PBX using PSTN or ISDN but equipped ready for VoIP phone lines or SIP Trunks when the NBN reaches the site.

SHDSL INTERNET - VITAMIN B FOR BUSINESS HEADACHES

SHDSL BROADBAND - HIGH QUALITY BUSINESS GRADE DATA THAT FIXES YOUR INTERNET HEADACHES

SHDSL internet is a dedicated business grade data connection that removes the slow internet shackles that are killing your business.

Services start at 10/10Mbps upload and down load, right up to 80/80Mbps.

How does SHDSL make a difference?

Aside from lower upload speeds, ADSL can either send or receive data packets. It cant send and receive at the same time. SHDSL can send and receive at the same time and this combined with faster data transfer rates makes all the difference.

If you are using ADSL for Cloud based applications such as Web Based mail servers, Google Apps, Office 365, Zero, MYOB, or Offsite and remote access then the ADSL upload speed will be a serious noose around your data flows.

By having a dedicated 1:1 connection (not shared with anyone else ...you get 100% of the bandwidth) and increased upload speed you get out of the restrictive environment of ADSL. SHDSL internet fixes this.

Many companies are moving to Hosted PBX Phone Systems and finding that sharing Voice and Data over a ADSL connection just doesn't cut it. SHDSL internet Fixes this.

Remote access staff complain about being unable to work efficiently when they log in off site. SHDSL internet fixes this.

Your offices are in an area with a congested ADSL exchange and you have daily slow downs with your ADSL Data flows. SHDSL internet fixes this.

The cost of your telephony, servers and support is going through the roof. You are looking at a unfied communications solution and want to use Cloud based apps but worried about the data costs. SHDSL fixes this.

GETTING READY FOR A NBN PHONE SYSTEM

Getting ready for a NBN Phone System

So you have decided to purchase a Hosted PBX, NBN Phone System or Telstra DOT (DIGITAL OFFICE TECHNOLOGY) system. What do you need to do to ensure the transition or installation is as hassle free as possible?

Here’s a few pointers that will make the move to a NBN Phone System and other cloud based services as easy as possible

1. Do you have adequate data cabling in place?

Each NBN Phone System or Hosted PBX Handset requires and Ethernet port for connectivity so ideally you have 2 X Ethernet Ports at each desk location. 1 Ethernet Port for Voice and 1 Ethernet for data. There are other options such as wireless handsets and piggy backing the PC from the Handset, but we find that having a separate port for PC and Phone is the most effective option. Of course for smaller sites the handsets can be connected directly to the router if everything is one spot in the building.

2. Do you have adequate Patch panel capacity at your Communications Cabinet?

For larger sites, when NBN Phone System handsets are installed they will need a distribution point at the Comms room where the switch and router will be located. If there isn’t enough capacity with a port for each handset then you will need to get the patch panel upgrade with enough ports for each phone and PC.

3. Power?

NBN Phone Systems and Hosted PBX phone systems can be susceptible to power fluctuations. It is important to ensure you do not use cheap power boards for any Voice products. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) can also assist of you are in an area that suffers for regular power outages. As long as all devices (including the Modem/Router) on the Phone System are connected to the UPS, you should be able to keep you phone system on line in the event of an outage.

4. Internet Capacity.

A NBN phone system running over a NBN connection will rarely have call quality issues. Over ADSL however it’s important to ensure you have a reasonably good quality ADSL connection with adequate bandwidth available for each call. It is recommended to allow 100Kbps bandwidth in each (both download and upload) for each simultaneous call. If you don’t have sufficient ADSL capacity then it’s worth considering adding in a 2nd DSL connection dedicated to your Hosted PBX.

5. Call flows.

We find that many customers do not put enough consideration into how they want incoming calls to be managed and this leads to additional costs for re programming the NBN Phone System after the installation. Ensure you consider each group and individual phone user. For example reception calls may be handled differently to Executive or warehouse calls. What do you want to happen to calls after hours? Go to Voice Mail or an After Hours number? Will you use Auto Attendant, Line Hunt Give or any of the other features that NBN phone systems have available.

SHDSL BROADBAND - WHY BOTHER?

SHDSL BROADBAND FOR SMEs. WHY ITS A NO BRAINER?

We are regularly questioned by customers, why would they consider taking a $500 a month SHDSL Internet connection when we have our $80 a month ADSL connection. For many SMEs, moving to a SHDSL connection is a No Brainer. Here's why.

1. SHARING DATA AND VOICE OVER A SINGLE SHDSL CONNECTION.

Many of SMEs don't realize that when you move to a Dedicated SHDSL Broadband connection you have significantly more bandwidth and capacity than over a a ADSL connection. This allows you run both data and voice calls over your Internet connection. Whats that mean?

2. USE SHDSL TO GET RID OF YOUR PHONE LINES.

Yes exactly what it says. A 10/10Mbs has adequate bandwidth to run about 150 simultaneous phone calls. Yes, thats right, up to 150 calls at a time so why bother paying for Line rentals when you can add in SIP trunks to your Phone System or a Hosted PBX Phone System. Getting rid of dealing with Telstra sounds really attractive!

3. ALLOW REMOTE ACCESS FOR STAFF TO YOUR ON SITE SERVERS.

Because the upload capacity is at least 10 X faster than for ADSL it means off site staff can access your server with out bringing the rest of the office to a halt. Every time your off site staff download info, your ADSL connection is uploading it. Because ADSL can only Send or receive data (it cant do both at the same time) staff working off site usually mean everyone else in the office stops working.

4. EVEN BETTER, GET RID OF YOUR SERVERS.

Having the capacity of a SHDSL connection gives you the bandwidth to make effective use of Cloud based applications including, Cloud Storage, Office 365, MYOB, Zero, Google Apps,Google Mail etc. This in tuns means you have no need for that server or the level of IT support required in the past. One SME customer of ours with 30 users reduced their IT Hardware, Software and Support costs from $150k per annum to under $30k per annum.

The $500 a month for SHDSL starts to look cheap doesn't it. If you would like to discuss SHDSL Broadband for your site please click this button.

Telstra DOT (Digital Office Technology) Cheaper Alternatives

Telstra DOT (Digital Office Technology) vs Telaustralia Hosted PBX and NBN Phone Systems

As we have discussed on several recent blog posts there is an number of great alternatives to Telstra DOT phone Systems.

In July we discussed what we didn't like about Telstra DOT -  Telstra DOT - What we don't like!

Previous to that we did some price comparisons of Telstra DOT vs Telaustralia NBN Phone Systems - Telstra DOT Good Value?

Well in the time since those posts nothing has changed and we just cant see any sense in taking the exact same hardware and the exact same operating platform and paying significantly more for it. As the NBN rolls out it appears Telstra DOT is the system of choice for Telstra Business Centres SMEs up to about 50 staff.

We are increasingly getting requests for quotes to compare with DOT systems in NBN roll out areas. In many cases we can determine for the customer that they don't need a new system. We have saved customers a lot of money by asking the right questions about their phone systems. In some cases we find that by doing some simple modifications the the Phone System, or by adding ATAs using SIP trunks over their NBN Connection, there is no need for an entire new Phone System.

Before you take the step for a new Telstra DOT Phone System give us a call for a comparison on 1300783528. If you have a recent phone bill you can send to us or submit this form we can give you a very accurate assessment of how your phone bill would look with a Telaustralia Hosted PBX or NBN Phone System.

THE NBN VERTIGAN REPORT

THE NBN 2014 COST BENEFIT REVIEW BY DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS

After coming to Government in 2013, the Coalition Government lead by Tony Abbot and Communications Minister Malcom Turnbull requested the Department of Communications conduct a full review of each Parties NBN proposal.

The Labour proposal was for Fibre to the Premises in Metro and regional Centres combined with Fixed Wireless in rural and remote areas and was purported to cost up to $90 billion.

The Coalition proposal was a paired back version with a mix of technologies utilizing existing Telstra and Optus Fibre coaxial cable (Hybrid)  in inner metro areas, Fibre to the premises on new build Green fields sites and Fibre to the Node (FTTN) in other brownfield (outer Metro) sites and Fixed Wireless and satellite in rural and remote areas. The cost of the Coalition Plans is purported to be in the $35-$45 billion range.

Dr Michael Vertigan AC was appointed to lead the review and the cost benefit analysis was announced this week. A link to the review can be found here.. http://www.communications.gov.au/broadband/national_broadband_network/cost-benefit_analysis_and_review_of_regulation/independent_cba_of_broadband

An interesting view point from the Age newspaper ..  http://www.theage.com.au/business/vertigan-shows-the-nbn-is-worth-doing-20140827-10975o.html

My view? Well every kid wants his dad to buy a Ferrari and that's what the Labour plan would of delivered ..... eventually. A super fast platform and the speed would of made sense at some point. Eg We cant drive the Ferrari on our streets as fast as it can potentially go most of the time, but sometimes it would be a real blast.

However while every kid wants the Ferrari most Dads, if they are responsible say, Mate I would love to get that Ferrari but we cant afford it. We are going to go with the Commodore or Falcon. It will get the job done and probably a bit slower in some cases but at least we can afford it.

Here's a video of Federal Comunications Minister Malcom Turnbull doing a fairly straight forward whiteboard exercise that looks at the cost benefits in fairly simple terms. http://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2014/aug/26/malcolm-turnbull-nbn-internet-speed-whiteboard-video

The Vertigan report basically supports this by saying that the increased speeds delivered by Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) that would of added 10s of Billions to the NBN build costs, would not of delivered an equivalent return on investment.

Loosely it says the extra $60-90 odd billion to build full FTTP would only deliver $2 Billion in total return on investment, while the Coalition proposal $35-45 Billion would deliver a net $18 Billion in return on investment

When it comes to speeds most people at this point are scratching their heads trying to find an application that will deliver ROI on a 1Gigabyte speed connection. At this point its only hypothetical (though I think likely given human ingenuity) that these apps will be come available over the next 20 years.

Testing so far  of Fibre to the Node is getting speeds in the order of up to 95Mbps download and 35Mbps+upload speed. Compared to current ADSL speeds that is a huge increase in speed. Sites that want to have fibre to the premises will in future be able to pay to have fibre built at their own cost, so I see that as a reasonable compromise.

Multi tenanted buildings/sites are going to have cable taken to the basement/MDF and will then be able to sue existing copper infrastructure to take the NBN service into the suites or elect to light up the entire building or individual suites with Fibre if that's their need.
