WHAT IS SHDSL BROADBAND?

WHAT IS SHDSL BROADBAND?

SHDSL ( Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) and a broadband connection delivered over multiple copper pairs or Fibre that provides symmetric bandwidth bit upstream and downstream. A standard ADSL Internet that most business use is Asymmetric in that it usually has a faster download speed and slower upload speeds. SHDSL has the same upload speed as download speed ...eg 20mbps/20mbps.

HOW FAST IS SHDSL BROADBAND?

Speeds currently available over copper or fibre are up to 100mb/100mb on AAPT network, 10Mb/10mb on Telstra SHDSL and 20mb/20Mb on Soul EFM network.

Soon a 400mbps/400Mbps fibre product will be available for most capital cities.

WHAT IS THE CONTENTION RATIO?

Tye Contention ratio is the number is users on the service. A 1:1 is a dedicated service with no other users while a 1:4 may have up to 4 users on the service. a Dedicated 1:1 connection will have a better quality of service in most cases as no other users are sharing the service.

WHAT DOES SHDSL GET USED FOR?

As business move applications to the cloud they are finding the ADSL upload speeds are not adequate. If moving services to the cloud SHDSL is more commonly used for Web and Email server hosting, Video Conferencing, Large data file transfers, Corporate LAN to LAN connections such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and where multiple remote users require access. Once a SHDSL connection is in place it often allows a business to review telephony and move ISDN and PSTN services to Hosted PBX or SIP Trunks.

CAN I USE MY ADSL MODEM/ROUTER FOR SHDSL

Only if you have an ADSL router as a Ethernet WAN Port. other wise you will need to purchase and Ethernet router.

CAN I USE A PHONE SERVICE ON THE SHDSL LINE?

SHDSL is not like ADSL in that it is run over a shared phone lines so now it cat be used for Voice Directly. However you can use Hosted PBX, SIP Trunks or a VoIP Phone System over a SHDSL data connection.SHDSL BROADBAND

TELSTRA DOT (DIGITAL OFFICE TECHNOLOGY) A POOR CHOICE FOR YOUR BUSINESS

TELSTRA DOT - MISSING BASIC FEATURES?

Previously we have covered the finances of using a Telstra DOT vs one of our Hosted PBX Options. Telstra DOT not good value

We were quoting a job this week when the client set us through an email from the local Telstra Business Centre . It went on to detail why DOT was not really very good, including that DOT is missing a range of basic features that realistically mean there's not much point in having a DOT phone system at all. Here's an extract...

All of the features are standard on most other providers Hosted PBX Systems. Our systems come standard with the following features plus many more....

  • Seamlessly transfer calls between any site on our system for free
  • Place calls on Hold or mute. Calls on hold hear customized Music or Message on Hold
  • Use a large range of Cordless or Corded Headsets
  • Line Hunt
  • After hrs messaging
  • Auto Attendant or Virtual receptionist
  • Relocate handsets any where there is a reasonable Internet connection.

This highlights again, the many reasons why SMEs should be looking at alternatives to Telstra DOT.

MyPBX NBN Ready Phone Systems

ISDN WONT CHANGE OVER THE NBN

WHY ISDN WONT CHANGE ON THE NBN!

While we are all waiting on NBN Co to release their business products, one question keeps coming up. What will happen with ISDN 102030 services when the copper is pulled up?

We think not much at all!

At the moment the majority of ISDN 102030 connections are delivered over a 2mbps/2mbps synchronous data connection and this will deliver up to 30 Channels. ISDN 2 Services are usually delivered over a 128kbps/128kbps connection on 2 copper pairs.

The ISDN Network Termination Unit is effectively a modem for the service with typically a Ethernet handover for ISDN 102030.

So making the leap to having a synchronous data connection over the NBN and utilizing it for an ISDN service, doesn't take much imagination. It may only require a change of NTU and some routing of the data service back to a Telstra or Optus exchange where the ISDN service is centered.

In the mean time its fairly safe to say that ISDN isn't going any where and at this point appears to have a fairly long future. The only risk we foresee is that ISDN channel rental is about 3 times higher than SIP trunks but SIP trunks don't have all of the functionality ad features of ISDN.

HOSTED PBX PHONE SYSTEMS VS PSTN

A 30 SECOND GUIDE TO CHANGING FROM PSTN PHONE LINES TO HOSTED PBX

I read with interest an industry survey from telecom comparison website detailing why some customers choose to change to Hosted PBX or SIP Trunks while others choose to remain with PSTN phone lines.

http://www.softwareadvice.com/voip/industryview/PSTN-report-2014/

Telstra DOT Phone Systems

In short the main reasons to move from PSTN or Hosted PBX or SIP Trunks are ...

  • Lower Purchase and Monthly Operating Costs
  • Desktop and mobile compatibility
  • More features
  • Easily scalable and portable
  • NBN Compatibility

The main reason users remain with PSTN or ISDN lines are ...

  • Ease of Use
  • Fewer service interruptions
  • Better Voice Quality
  • Security/Fraud concerns
  • Don't know what Hosted PBX or VoIP is
  • Internet is unreliable.

Our observations are the main reasons for going to Hosted PBX are lower purchase price, cheaper running costs and additional phone systems features such as the ability to seamlessly transfer calls to other sites. A emerging trend is clients in areas where the NBN roll out has commenced who want a Phone System that can run over an ADSL connection but is also NBN compatible.

Our experience in Australia is that due to the state of the copper network, the out comes running over an ADSL connection can vary dramatically. NBN and SHDSL Business Grade Internet connections in comparison, rarely have an issue. Running Hosted PBX over an ADSL on the other hand, can be effected by packet loss, drop outs and contention.

This is why we thoroughly test an ADSL connection where possible before proceeding with a Hosted PBX installation. It is not uncommon for us to say to a prospective client that due to distance from the exchange, ADSL speed or line quality, we don't recommend a Hosted PBX for this particular site. In these cases we usually recommend the client install a traditional PBX using PSTN or ISDN but equipped ready for VoIP phone lines or SIP Trunks when the NBN reaches the site.
