ADSL BROADBAND INTERNET Q&A

Q. How Long does it take for my ADSL Broadband Internet Connection to come on line.

A. Thanks for choosing TELAUSTRALIA. New Broadband ADSL Internet connections are usually active with 3-6 days with 3 working days being typical. If you are churning your ADSL Broadband Internet from another provider usually 48 hrs.

Q. How do I get my modem?

A. Once your service is active we configure and post the modem to you via Australia Post Express Post

Q. What do I do when I get my modem?

A. There are easy to follow instructions provided with your modem but if you run into any trouble or feel uncertain you can ring our Tech Support line 1300 765 197

Q. What happens when if I reach my download limit?

A. What happens when you reach and exceed your download limit in a particular month depends on your plan. If you are on a shaped plan then your speed will slow down. If you are on a excess data plan then you will pay for any data used over and above your monthly allowance.

If you have chosen a Flat Rate plan, then your download speed will be 'shaped', meaning it will be cut to that of regular dial up (roughly 56k). You can still download as much as you like, and will never be charged an excess usage fee.

Q. What is Wireless Broadband?

A. Wireless broadband comes ion several forms. The most common is via a Wireless network. Other forms include Wireless Hot Spots and there is also Wireless Internet service such as Telaustralia Wireless Broadband..

Q. How do I set up a Wireless Network at home or for my Business?

A. Setting up a Wireless network is very easy with our service and Netcomm modems. You need to have a ADSL or SHDSL Internet Service and then use a Wireless Router or a Wireless Modem such as a NETCOMM NB6 PLUS 4W OR NB9 + W.

1. Simply plug the Ethernet cable into the router or modem plug then you will see the ADSL light and then the PPP lights come on to indicate you have an Internet Connection.

2. Find your network Connections button.

3. Click add new wireless network.

4. Your Netcomm Modem name or Wireless Connection will come up on the screen and you will be asked to enter a WEP security key. This is located on the bottom of your Modem or Router.

5. Enter the WEP Key information. At this point you can elect to change the WEP key for security purposes.

6. After you close this down you then need to go to Network Connection and click connect on your network connection. Its as simple as that! If you have trouble ring our Technical Support line on 1300 765 197

Q. Can I upgrade or downgrade my broadband plan?

A. Yes at any time for a small fee unless you have elected a contracted plan option that precludes this.

Q. Can I get Broadband anywhere?

A. As long as your home or office resides with the area of an ADSL enabled exchange and all technical parameters are met. Check availability on your phone number here LINK TO BROADBAND CHECKER>

Q. What is ADSL broadband?

A. ADSL is a broadband service which provides fast Internet through your existing telephone line. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, and the service offers a high-speed Internet connection, which allows you to remain permanently online, as well as to place and receive phone calls while connected.

Q. What are the benefits of ADSL broadband?

A. Some of the many benefits of ADSL broadband include:
• lighting fast Internet at speeds up to 140 times quicker than regular dial up
• the ability to place and receive phone calls while surfing the net
• a permanent connection - save money by not dialing in every time you connect
• no second phone line - save money by using the existing cabling to your home
• fast downloading of online video and broadband only content
• the ability to link multiple computers to the Internet with the one connection
• Read the top 10 reasons to choose TELAUSTRALIA ADSL link

Q. How fast is ADSL broadband?

ADSL broadband is up to 140 times faster than dial up. The speed of your ADSL connection depends on the line speed you have selected. TELAUSTRALIA currently offers ADSL line speeds of 1500kbps, 8000kbps & ADSL 2+ up to 24Mbps. Regular dial up is 56kbps.

Q. Is my speed Guaranteed?

A. No. Your actual speeds depend on a large range of factors. The main factors that effect eventual line speed include distance from the exchange, condition of the copper running from the exchange to your premises, the age and condition of the equipment at the exchange, the number of users on line at any one time and the condition of your internal cabling.

Q. Whats the difference between ADSL & SHDSL?

SHDSL Internet uses the full range of frequencies running through the cable enabling a higher quality of signal. This also allows data to pass in both directions but also means that there are no frequencies left for voice transmission. ADSL uses only a portion of the available frequencies in the cable allowing normal voice calls to share the line.

Q. Whats the difference between Business Grade and Residential Grade Internet?

The main difference between Standard Grade Internet and Business Grade Internet services is the availability and Variable Contention ratios. Variable Contention ratios are the number of users allocated by the ISP on any one link. Usual Standard Grade Variable Contention ratios are around 40-150 Users (some discount ISPs have 200 or more) on the one link. With Business Grade Internet the variable Contention Ratio can be as low as One user but typically 4-8 users per link. Our Business Grade lite has Contention ratios of around 40 users but is monitored and managed 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday. With a Business Grade Service Up time is also managed by the ISP so there is 99% + availability.

Q. Can I still use my fax or answering machine with ADSL?

A. You can still use any telephone, fax or answering machine with ADSL. Once you have ADSL, each telephone handset, fax or answering machine (and any other telephony devise) in your home will need a line filter. A line filter is a small device which separates voice and fax signals from Internet traffic. One line filter is supplied with every modem purchased from TELAUSTRALIA. Additional line filters can be ordered during the joining process.

Q. Can I bring my own modem?

A. Yes . Most modems are compatible with our service.

Q. What are line filters and how many do I need?

A. A line filter is a small device which separates voice and fax signals from Internet traffic.
Once you have ADSL, each telephone handset, fax or answering machine in your home will need one - so that's one filter for every telephony device in your home. If you have a monitored alarm system you will need a central filter. A qualified technician must install this and we recommend speaking to your alarm company.

Q. If I have a MAC OSX or another Operating system aside from Windows can I still get ADSL?
A. Yes. TELAUSTRALIA ADSL broadband will work with any operating system that supports the TCP/IP protocol. Our support staff can help with most Windows (95/98/2000/XP/7) and Mac OS X). If you have any questions please call our Technical Support team on 1300 765 197.
