HOW DO I MAKE VoIP CALLS?
Making a VoiP call is simple. You can use one of three methods.
1.
Use a Soft phone – This is software downloaded to your Computer that usually
will display an image of a telephone on your desktop. Connect headphone and
microphone and make calls my using your mouse to dial the numbers.
2.
Analogue Telephone Adapter _ An ATA is an adapter that allows you to plug a
normal Analogue phones into your Computer and then dial out using the VoiP
connection.
3. VoiP SIP Phone. This is a specialized Phone that plugs
directly into your computer, usually via a USB port and is then used to make
calls via VoIP.
HOW DOES VoIP WORK?
Voice over the Internet condenses your voice into a data packet and sends up
the line. It also un scrambles data packets coming down the line and converts
them back into voice. Ideally you would have as a minimum a 512/k/512k symmetric
DSL connection or higher. To get the best quality VoiP calls you may require a
dedicated 512/512k DSL service. The service described here is not a commercial
grade service. For Commercial Grade VoiP service see our Business Connect
Business Phone Package page.

Footnote 1 – We are unable to provide Technical Support for this product unless
you have your ADSL or SHDSL service with telaustralia. It is impossible to run
diagnostic testing if a problem is experienced and you are not on our ADSL or
SHDSL service.
Footnote 2 – Voice quality using VoiP can vary greatly and is impacted by many
variables including Internet Speeds, distance from exchange, volume of data
traffic at time of day, residential or Business grade Internet service, quality
of cabling internal and external to premises and quality of equipment being
used. It is important customers understand that VoiP call quality cannot be
guaranteed at any time and that our basic VoIP offering is a standard grade
service … it is not a business grade service.
Leading Australian Telecommunications analyst Paul Budde surveyed consumer
impressions of VoiP recently with the following results.
- 20% of cases they couldn’t detect any quality difference – it was only when
the callers told them they were using VoIP that they became aware.
- 60% of
cases the quality was similar to a bad mobile call, or some international calls
from remote countries. If everything around you is quiet, a reasonable
conversation is possible. If there is any distracting noise you can easily lose
the gist of the conversation.
- 20% of cases the quality was so bad that
people asked the caller to phone back on a ‘normal’ phone.
